White Kitchen Cabinet Finishes

Whether or not white kitchen cabinets are a good idea is beyond the scope of this article. I really just want to tell folks that not all white kitchen cabinets are created equal. White can mean paint (the most obvious), white stain, and white thermafoil. Also, there are different shades of what can be considered white. I know, most people call them off-white, but I’m me, and for the sake of this piece those are getting lumped into the white category. Natural Birch Here is a natural piece of birch. Very nice. Next is what Bertch (yes, it sounds the same, and gets confusing when Bertch Birch comes up in conversation. If there’s ever a color by these people called Berch or something like that, I quit) calls Snowbank. It’s a kind of white washed looking stain. I’ve never taken to it, but I’m sure with the right color scheme (in the rest of the kitchen) this would be beautiful.Bertch Birch Snowbank (a white stain) I call it a white kitchen cabinet color even though quite a bit of the wood comes through. This is available on most wood species, even maple. In fact, the next two pictures I have are in maple. They’re Diamond samples. One is Natural, and the other is called Opal.Diamond Natural MapleDiamond Opal in Maple           There are white kitchen cabinets in oak as well. Oak has such an open grain that any glazing done on a cabinet painted white is very pronounced. Here you can see natural oak, and Bertch’s Sepia (barely off-white) with a brown glaze. See how the grain took the glaze?Natural Oak FinishOak in Sepia with a brown gaze         There are a few different versions of white kitchen cabinets, depending on how you want to look at it.  Make sure that when you’re shopping for white kitchen cabinets, you see lots of samples.  Get different woods with different shades of white on them; each species takes a white finish in its own way.
