Thermofoil Kitchen Cabinets
One kind of cabinet that doesn’t get a whole lot of press is the Thermofoil Kitchen Cabinet. Popular in high traffic public areas, I also see a lot of these cabinets in college dorms and hotels. This is probably because they are SO easy to clean. Why is that?
Well, Thermofoil is essentially a kind of plastic that’s wrapped around a core of particleboard or MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) Plastic, as I’m sure you will agree, cleans quite a bit easier than its wood (i.e. porous) cousins. There’s also the uniformity to think about. With wood, no two pieces are alike. Even with a stellar paint job, there may be some variation from one cabinet door to the next.
With Thermofoil kitchen cabinets, there is no such variation. Every surface has the exact same finish and texture. The cost and quality of Thermofoil kitchen cabinets varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally Thermofoil kitchen cabinets are under the same set of standards as any other cabinets a particular cabinet manufacturer makes.
They should also be available with all of the same options, like soft close and dovetail drawers. There might be less of a selection in the molding department, but at least crown molding and fillers are almost always available in Thermofoil. Thermofoil kitchen cabinets also come in a few shades of color, not just white. Most are some sort of gray or cream. Who knows though? Maybe someone will start copying Ikea and make some nice fire engine red Thermofoil kitchen cabinets.

Real Wood Cabinetry: Beautiful but Maybe Plywood is Better
Young Furniture Mfg recently switched from making 3/4" real wood cabinetry sides to making their cabinets with 3/4" plywood sides. A little taken aback (I was always impressed with how beefy their cabinets were — I think they'd survive a meteor strike!) I called to ask why this switch was made, and why it didn't affect [...]
Kitchen Cabinet Costs Change Depending on Cabinet Wood Species
There are several factors that determine kitchen cabinet costs, and one of the bigger ones is wood species. The same door style can have several different prices if a manufacturer makes in several different kind of wood. A cherry kitchen cabinet costs more than the same cabinet in oak, for instance, Here are a few [...]
Oak Kitchen Cabinets, Listen to Your Heart
Almost anyone I ever talk to in the kitchen design world says that oak kitchen cabinets went out of style in the 80's. Whether this is true or not, enough people must want them or the cabinet companies would have stopped making them. To be frank, I'm a bit prejudiced. I can't stand [...]
People Love Maple Kitchen Cabinets
Maple kitchen cabinets are much preferred these days to other woods for several reasons. There are several species of maple, but most maple kitchen cabinets are made with sugar (also called hard or rock) maple. These are also the species usually used in musical instruments. Maple has a tight grain, for the most part. and [...]
Maple vs Birch Cabinets
There are several arguments over whether maple vs birch is better. They each have their merits and drawbacks. Maple vs birch is a choice I'd be hard pressed to make because they're so similar. Maple vs Birch: The Grain OK all you smart people out there. Which one is which? These [...]
Colored Thermofoil Cabinets
In this article about thermofoil cabinets I mentioned how hard it was to find thermofoil cabinets in something other than white and off white. After some googling I found webinetry.com . They had quite a selection of thermofoil. One phone call later (and a couple of very quick follow up emails) and I had some answers from Michael. [...]
Maple Kitchen Doors
Just like any wood species, maple doors for kitchen cabinets come in several styles. I’ve hopefully saved you some legwork by snagging some manufacturer’s maple door pictures and posting them here. I’ll try to point out points of interest as we go. Here’s a door from a company local to me. Young Furniture Mfg [...]
Birch Kitchen Cabinets
I notice, in my neck of the woods, that birch trees are everywhere.I got to wondering if these are in fact the trees that many birch cabinets are made from. After talking to someone from Bertch, I found out that the answer is no. I see white birch and silver birch in Maine, but [...]
